When you first started your own business it's very easy to make mistakes. Rather than try to make all the mistakes yourself why not learn from others. Here are some things you want to avoid doing when starting up your business.Never fall into the trap of not managing your time. When you start your own business you need to have a schedule for the hours that you will work every day. You need to let friends and family members know that even though you were working at home, these hours are not available for anything but work each day. This can be very difficult as family members have a tendency to tell you, you can work any time I need this done now. You need to stick to your guns and tell them that you are not available during working business hours.
Not appearing professional to your clients can be another mistake. If you are going to have clients visiting your home office, you need to have a professional looking office with a place that you can sit and show them what you will have to offer. If your office does not look professional and you do not dress right when they come to visit, you will come off as being unprofessional and undependable.
Another mistake you can make when starting your home business is being too nice. You are running a business and no matter how tempted you are you cannot make your customers your friends. Once you do this your customers will expect you to do things for them free or for such a low cost that it winds up costing you money. Whenever you meet with clients be short to treat them in a friendly yet professional manner.
Employing too many people to do the work for you. When you first start your business you will have to take on most of the responsibilities and work yourself. If there are certain tasks that you cannot do and must hire out, just be sure to add the costs to your final price. As long as you do all the work that you can do yourself, it should not become a problem. As you get more business and your client base increases, then you will be able to farm out more of the tasks.
Another mistake is not following up with your customers. Always be sure to call your customers within a few days after they have made a purchase and make sure that they are happy with it. This is also a good time to tell them about other services they may benefit from.
Next time we will talk about the basics of setting up a business plan. Be sure to look for it in your email, you won't want to miss this one.
