3 Unusual Ways Freelancers can Self-Market Expertise Online

Freelancing is a great way for individuals to make some income working from home. There is a plethora of opportunities online, from blog writing to graphic design. However to actually get a paying gig, employers/webmasters need to know that you are actually “right” for the job and deserved to get paid. If your resume is looking kind of weak or you need a better way to demonstrate your skill level, below are some easy ways you can self-market using tools readily found online.

Teach an Online Class

Ok, you actually have to have a teaching certificate in order to be able to legitimately teach lessons through an online university, but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t spread your knowledge about a particular industry and teach those eager to be more informed. Creating webinars on YouTube or any other video sharing site is a great way to show that you’re so passionate about what you do, that you’re willing to take time to explain about certain concepts. It’s also an excellent way to show potential employers that you know your material, which in itself is impressive since it labels you as an industry leader. Send a link to your YouTube account when inquiring about a freelancing opportunity.

Post Sample Work on Social Media

No matter if you’re a freelance writer, graphic designer or a web designer, having a place where you can “publish” your work and show your skills is great. Some people choose to create individual SEO-friendly websites/blogs to showcase portfolio work while others simply post articles, designs, and other tips and tricks on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. Do whichever route you think is best for you—just make sure that you are always working on new material (whether you’re getting paid for it or not) and add/invite industry people to view your work. Send a link to some of your best material or your entire social medial account when inquiring about freelance positions. Really ambitious? Instead of writing a few articles or for example, compose an entire e-book.

Enter Contests Online

Lastly, always be on the lookout for competitions promoted online. Throughout the year there are several websites that offer writing or graphic design contests for example. Do some research and enter. If you win, these awards will just add to your prestige and help you stand out among other free lancers.
