3 Entrepreneurial Internet Business Ideas for Students

Creating a small internet business at home (or dorm room) is a really lucrative way for some students to earn some cash while in school—after all, a full course load doesn’t really allow students to find part time jobs that mesh perfectly with their schedules. But choosing to be your own boss and setting your own hours can change that. While we’re not promising that you’ll be the next Mark Zuckerburg—who notoriously developed the idea for Facebook in his dorm room at Harvard—the ideas that we’ve listed below might be able to help you pay off your loan debt come graduation time.

Online Thrift Shop

A fairly easy internet business idea is selling inexpensive, gently used clothing online. Thrift stores and consignment shops are all the rage right now, especially those who are conscious about the Earth. So what better way to appeal to the campus masses then by providing a thrift shop of sorts online? On the plus side, an online model will make thrift shopping a tad bit easier—one of the downsides of thrift store shopping is that it takes a lot of time to rummage through all the racks of clothes, which are often disorganized. But by posting photos and using a responsive word press theme for online shopping like Grid Point it should make the shopping experience that much easier. You can ask friends and roommates to donate clothes they no longer need or go garage sale shopping for unique clothes at a fraction of their original price and sell them for a reasonable profit.

Online Textbook Exchange

Another great idea you can pursue while in school is to create a service where students can connect with fellow students on campus and purchase (or even exchange for free) textbooks that they need for certain classes. Often students get upset that new textbooks at campus bookstores are so expensive or get annoyed that they hardly get any money back when selling their books back to the campus bookstore. But this kind of internet business can really help students find what they’re looking for without getting gipped. You could charge a small fee in order to help “connect” these students.

Online Late Night Snack Shop

Last but not least, you could start an online late-night snack shop. I remember my days in college where I wished I could order a bag of chips or skittles online at midnight and it be delivered to my front door that same day. This kind of business model could really work in a college setting. But you need to make sure you get all the proper licenses and food permits first. But since you would be selling pre-packaged goods, it shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish.

Of course, these are only a few suggestions to help get the ball rolling. There are tons of online businesses you can pursue while still in college. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
